December 2007

In November 2007, the Armenian Cultural Association of Portland, ME (ACAME) hosted a dance with SOAR as its guest of honor. To our amazement, more than $8000 was raised! While we originally intended to use any donated funds to assist one orphanage, enough money was raised to allow us to address the critical needs of two orphanages. For Gavar, we had a new heating system installed and purchased new mattresses, and for Kharberd, we covered the cost of renovating two bathrooms. SOAR extends its heartfelt gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Jirair Kiladjian and Mr. Moses Maranian, without whose help the ACAME collection would never have occurred.

In addition to making these purchases for Gavar and Kharberd, SOAR had a very fruitful holiday season. We purchased mattresses for Children's Home of Gyumri, a freezer for Hatug Tibi, desks for Houys, a TV and DVD player for Nubarashen, audio visual equipment for Trchoonian Home, a freezer for Vanadzor, mattresses for Vardashen, and new shoes for the children of Zatik. In addition, we made cash donations to Our Lady of Armenia, Sisters of Charity, and SOS Children's Center. We also shipped more than $17,000 worth of clothes, toys, games, and school supplies via the United Armenia Fund airlift. These goods arrived in mid-December and were provided to the orphanages in time for Christmas!

June 2007

During February and March 2007, the Armenian Cultural Association of Portland, ME (ACAME), St. Gregory's Armenian Church of Merrimack Valley, MA, St. Vartanantz Armenian Church of Providence, RI, and the Armenian Relief Society (Arax Chapter of Merrimack Valley, MA) organized a collection for Nubarashen Orphanage. Spearheading this collection were Mr. Moses Maranian (Project Manager, ACAME) and Der Hayr Vartan and Yeretzgin Pauline Kassabian (St. Gregory's). Their efforts were superbly organized and well-received, yielding more than $4,000 in cash and goods valued at more than $10,000.

The donated cash was used to purchase a variety of items in Armenia (see April 2007 below). The donated goods arrived in Armenia, via the United Armenia Fund airlift, in June. Also on this airlift were items donated to Children's Home of Gyumri and the Our Lady of Armenia summer camp, held annually in Tsaghgazor. We wish the children a very enjoyable summer!

In April, SOAR's Treasurer, George S. Yacoubian, and one of our Partners in Armenia, Siranoush Hovhannisyan, purchased the following items for Nubarashen with the donated cash: one refrigerator/freezer, one washing machine, one television set, one sofa, and 60 chairs. The donated goods will arrive in Armenia, via the United Armenia Fund airlift, in May. If any organization, church, or school is interested in coordinating a similar collection, please contact George S. Yacoubian, Jr., at (610) 213-3452 or gyacoubian@soar-us.org. Any effort would be greatly appreciated, as all of the orphanages have specific needs.

March 2007

During the fall of 2006, Mrs. Christina Papazian spearheaded a holiday collection for Gavar Orphanage. The bulk of the donated items came from St. John Armenian Church in Southfield, MI, and the Alex and Marie Manoogian Armenian School in Southfield, MI. Their efforts yielded nearly $7,500 in toys. We offer our heartfelt gratitude for an excellent collection!
