May 9, 2014-Fairbanks, Alaska: SOAR Alaska Chapter board members Alice Manawelian, Seta Bogosyan and Rex Estrada held their very first annual charity event in the Golden Heart city of Fairbanks, Alaska. A movie night featuring the film “Sunrise Over Lake Van”. As 25 guests were filling their tummies with delectable Armenian treats of Cheese Boeregs and Paklava, the featured film, Sunrise Over Lake Van was feeding their souls, minds and spirits.

The guests were very receptive to the information on SOAR, Armenian orphanages and Armenian Genocide History of 1915 which tied into the featured film. Seta shared about her grandmother's firsthand experience during the Genocide and Rex assisted.

One of the guests commented saying, "Why were we not ever told this before?"

“All in all, our voices were heard representing the Armenian orphans and the unspoken stories of our ancestors. They would have been proud of us!”said, Alice. Many thanks to the dedication, commitment and efforts of SOAR Alaska board and its volunteers Mike and Lisa States, Gerald Maschmann, Loraine Gaffin, Chris Wise and Johnny Mendez for making this event a great success raising over $700!!

In January of 2014, the newly formed Baltimore Chapter of SOAR introduced SOAR, and its mission, to assembled guests of the Armenian Association of Greater Baltimore’s annual holiday dinner. We hosted tables with SOAR informational displays and materials, and sold Armenian handicrafts for the benefit of the Nork orphanage, which we sponsored for this event. Nearly everyone visited our tables to learn about SOAR and to purchase handicrafts in support of our fundraiser. There were many expressions of goodwill, and contributions received, for SOAR’s mission of providing relief to orphaned Armenians. Through the generosity of direct donations and proceeds from the sale of handicrafts, we were able to donate $800.00 for baby supplies, purchased and delivered by SOAR partners in Armenia, for the Nork orphanage.

Taste of Armenia Street Fair

August 24th SOAR Chicago hosted a booth at the Famous Taste of Armenia Street Fair in Evanston, Il.
Over the years, Evanston' s TASTE OF ARMENIA festival--one of the premiere Armenian picnics in the Chicago area-- has become a favorite end-of-summer event for Chicagoans of all ethnic backgrounds. With annual attendance of well over 1000 people, the festival offers a leisurely sunny afternoon of delicious Armenian cooking, rousing music, and great company.
The Taste of Armenia serves up charcoal-grilled kebabs and homemade specialties including healthy salads, 'sarma' rolls with fresh-picked grape leaves (nothing canned!) Few can resist the bountiful table of our grandmas' pastries and a steaming cup of Armenian coffee (fortunes told on request!)
The festival also adds a full day of cultural offerings drawn from across the country, highlighting ancient and modern aspects of the people who comprise the first Christian nation. Prominent local Armenian bands play music for line dancing all afternoon, and there is always plenty of games and activities for kids.

Summer 2014

The SOAR Colorado chapter had a successful summer garage sale to support its annual January Art Show. We raised $1,190 thanks to a popular ad on Craigslist that promoted a fun sale that would benefit a great cause. The team – SOAR Colorado members and their friends and family – boosted the total at the end of the day with creative end-of-sale bargains.

The garage sale was the Colorado chapter’s second annual. Its January Art Show supports art programs at Warm Hearth, a group home in Armenia for disabled orphans who have aged out of orphanages.

Items including racks of clothing, boxes of toys and games, home decorations, and plenty of knick-knacks were generously donated by members, friends and family. Next up for Colorado: A fun and educational evening about Armenia, where we hope to raise the remaining needed to sponsor the Art Show.

April 2014

Shoghig and Maral Vayedjian, local supporters of the Colorado chapter for the Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief (SOAR), held a special event on April 6 to benefit Warm Hearth, an Armenian group home founded for orphans with disabilities and mental illness who have outgrown the orphanages. The event at the Pinnacle Clubhouse in Denver brought friends – new and old – together for Armenian Lenten foods, drinks and music, followed by a bake sale and raffle. Shogig and Maral cooked for weeks before the event. The attendees learned about Warm Hearth and its mission, and all contributions were voluntary. The event raised $1.725, all of it sent to Warm Hearth.

January 2014

The Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief’s Colorado Chapter raised $4,658 at its annual January Art Show to benefit the 2014 art program at Warm Hearth. Warm Hearth is a group home in Armenia founded in 2006 for orphans with disabilities who have outgrown orphanages.

“With your continuous support, we are showing the Armenian government a model of an effective group home that is an alternative to life in institutions. While the residents are thriving, growing and healing, Warm Hearth continues its groundbreaking work and carries the torch for dignified life for orphans with disabilities”, Stepanyan said.

The January Art Show featured artwork from Warm Hearth residents, as well as local Colorado artists. Local businesses donated raffle items. For the first time, the historic Boulderado hotel in Boulder, CO, served as the backdrop for the event. A former U.S. Peace Corps volunteer founded Warm Hearth, which was the first long-term group home in Armenia. The first eight residents of the home were on the brink of being sent to psychiatric institutions because there was no other means of support available for them after outgrowing the orphanages. Instead, Warm Hearth opened its doors and has since welcomed more residents.

Since 2010, the art show has raised the annual budget of Warm Hearth’s art program from zero to nearly $5,000. The program allows Warm Hearth residents to have art teachers, quality materials and supplies. Warm Hearth residents enjoy painting, paper mache, beading, carpet-weaving, drawing, embroidery and making traditional Armenian dolls.

The residents now participate in exhibits and fairs in Armenia and sell their artwork to support the home.

The January Art Show has raised a total of $16,444 since the first event five years ago.

Haroutiun Galentz an orphan, lived through our nations tragedy of genocide and then went on to become one of our nations most accomplished artist.

The event was well received by the guests who attended. Everyone had the opportunity to meet and talk with Saro about his father's life. Saro also brought with him a couple of his father's paintings to showcase.

In mid September, two private invitations in Zug, Switzerland raised $640 for SOAR Zurich at the home of Board member Tania Gulekjian Mobayed. By expressing personal reasons why her family supports the Armenian orphans in need, asking guests to donate instead of bringing gifts, and sharing the SOAR website prior to the invitations, guests were generous and impressed with SOAR's mission and accomplishments. A donation box decorated with a SOAR brochure was available for those wanting to help by making a contribution.

The morning breakfast and evening cocktail events were social in nature among the neigborhood where Armenian and Lebanese culture is rare, raising an interest to learn more about it. The idea of sharing briefly the SOAR goals resulted in focused new donations to the Birds' Nest and Bzommar institutions for children's sports items and tuition support.

It was a pleasure to share an enjoyable time with friends and continue to raise awareness of SOAR locally.
