Taste of Armenia Street Fair

August 30th SOAR Chicago hosted a booth at the Famous Taste of Armenia Street Fair in Evanston, Il.
Over the years, Evanston' s TASTE OF ARMENIA festival--one of the premiere Armenian picnics in the Chicago area-- has become a favorite end-of-summer event for Chicagoans of all ethnic backgrounds. With annual attendance of well over 1000 people, the festival offers a leisurely sunny afternoon of delicious Armenian cooking, rousing music, and great company.
The Taste of Armenia serves up charcoal-grilled kebabs and homemade specialties including healthy salads, 'sarma' rolls with fresh-picked grape leaves (nothing canned!) Few can resist the bountiful table of our grandmas' pastries and a steaming cup of Armenian coffee (fortunes told on request!)
The festival also adds a full day of cultural offerings drawn from across the country, highlighting ancient and modern aspects of the people who comprise the first Christian nation. Prominent local Armenian bands play music for line dancing all afternoon, and there is always plenty of games and activities for kids.

SOAR-Chicago Hosts a Night of Music and Memories

Over 100 people came out to SOAR-Chicago’s 5th Annual Fundraiser to enjoy a night of wonderful music, good food, and old and new friends. This year’s event, which marked the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, featured traditional Armenian folk songs performed by the a cappella trio Zulal from New Jersey. It was a moving tribute to traditional Armenian culture, and a reminder that so many Armenian children still need our help.

The June 20th event was held at St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church in Chicago. Guests enjoyed bidding on the many silent auction items and taking a chance in a raffle for a beautiful Michael Aram platter. Over $6,000 was raised at the event to support new dental clinics throughout Armenia.

August 2015

The SOAR Colorado chapter once again had a successful summer garage sale to support its annual January Art Show. We raised $1,300, up over last year’s event. SOAR Colorado members and their friends and family joined together for the chapter’s third-annual garage sale, selling hundreds of donated items from clothes and furniture to toys and kitchenware.

The January Art Show supports art programs at Warm Hearth, a group home in Armenia for orphans with disabilities who have aged out of orphanages. The goal is to raise awareness, as well as funds, for the organization. The Colorado chapter is continuing to brainstorm new ways to raise money to support the cause, including a fall movie night at a local distillery and art house.
SOAR_colorago_annual_garage_sale_2015

January 31, 2015

The Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief’s Colorado Chapter raised $4,700 at its annual January Art Show to benefit the 2015 art program at Warm Hearth. Warm Hearth is a group home in Armenia founded in 2006 for orphans with disabilities who have outgrown orphanages.
The January Art Show has raised a total of $21,144 since the first event six years ago.
For the first time, the founder of Warm Hearth, a former U.S. Peace Corps volunteer, attended the January Art Show. Natalie Rizzieri, executive director of Friends of Warm Hearth, made the trip from Arizona and spoke passionately to supporters about what led her to open a group home after working at an orphanage in Kapan, Armenia, during her time in the Peace Corps.
The first eight residents of the home were on the brink of being sent to psychiatric institutions because there was no other means of support available for them after outgrowing the orphanages. Warm Hearth continues to open its doors to more residents. The home has since built credibility with the Armenian government and hopes to use that support to open more homes to provide care for other orphaned or abandoned individuals with disabilities.
The January Art Show featured the colorful artwork from Warm Hearth residents, as well as local Colorado artists and artists across the U.S. who supported the cause. Individuals, local businesses and organizations donated raffle items. The event was held at Noah’s Event Center in Westminster, Colorado. This year, the event showcased the music of a local harpist and featured a caricature artist, adding an element of whimsy to the night.
“The creation of art is expansive to the spirit and promotes the natural unfolding of the human potential. The opportunity to make art is integral to the health of the residents. SOAR-Colorado is proud to support the continuation of this essential program," said Maria Stepanyan, the Board President of SOAR-Colorado.

Since 2010, the art show has raised the annual budget of Warm Hearth’s art program from zero to nearly $5,000. The program allows Warm Hearth residents to have art teachers, quality materials and supplies, as well as art classes in the community. Warm Hearth residents enjoy painting, paper mache, beading, carpet-weaving, drawing, embroidery and making traditional Armenian dolls. The residents now participate in exhibits and fairs in Armenia and sell their artwork to support the home.

Nappies for Nork Orphanage Raffle was organized by adoptive mom Viviane Martini, in collaboration with SOAR, Hopscotch Adoptions, and private donors of raffle items.

Nork Orphanage is in dire need of disposable diapers, and while it should be the responsibility of the Armenian government to supply those basic necessities, we all know the reality and economic constraints. Let’s do a little quick math. In the US, you can purchase a brand-name diaper for between 15 and 30 cents each. In Armenia, they are a bit more expensive, so for ease of calculating, let’s say it’s 25 to 50 cents, depending on the size and brand. That means that for $1.50 to $3.00 a child at Nork can be clean and comfortable for an entire day. For around $70 a child has diapers for an entire month. Approximately $135 will keep every child at Nork in fresh diapers for a 24 hour period. SOAR has already set up a Diaper Fund, and you can make a tax deductible donation here.

Those that made contributions during this time had been entered into a drawing for items below:

Amanda Bynes returned to Twitter for the first time since March on Tuesday, sharing a photo of herself with designer Micheal Costello at a Los Angeles Gala.

"Me and the fabulous Micheal Costello (I'm wearing one of his beautiful gowns) at the SOAR Los Angeles Gala!" Bynes tweeted Tuesday night, her first since posting what appeared to be a self-portrair sketch in March.

The photo, taken at Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief's Casino Royale-themed black-tie event Sunday night, captured a smiling Bynes, 29, with long blonde hair and a black dress. Bynes hugged the designer who was sporting a polka-dot black-and-white bow tie.

"She was 100 percent in good spirits-she's just a sweetheart," the gala's event planner, Kat Minassi, told PEOPLE of Bynes, who wore a dress by Costello. "She had a wonderful time. Amanda supports the cause as well, so she came out with Micheal for the evening and she was in great spirits. She enjoyed the evening with us and looked beautiful in her gown".

With the help of Costello and his designs, the event raised over $60,000 for orphaned Armenians worldwide.

SOAR Ventura County Chapter’s picnic at the Conejo park in Ventura County , CA was an UNBELIEVABLE Success! From the most beautiful location, amazing kebab barbeque by Raffi’s catering, to the cappuccino bar by Bon Cafetit, entertainment by Diko DJ , Maral Boyadjian’s book reading, Ron Seredian’s reading from his grandfather’s “My Memoires” of Van and the most outstanding Ara Dance group who enchanted our guests, it was a truly cultural and heritage event! Added fun for the children was the junior section of the bouncy, popcorn, snow cone and cotton candy.
We thank Eskijian museum for their Genocide and Armenian Heritage book donations and Maral Boyadjian who donated the proceeds of her “As Poppies Bloomed” book sale at the event.
SOAR VC team did an excellent job in organizing the event. The chapter’s amazing junior members were fantastic in setting up the picnic, balloons, and helping throughout the event! Great Job juniors!
ETERNALLY GRATEFUL TO ALL who have been on this journey with us since the beginning of SOAR and SOAR VC efforts and who also came and supported!!!
