Denise Sisian (SOAR Executive Board secretary) and Susan Harootunian (SOAR East Regional Director) and her husband, Paul, with children Paulie & Anna, just returned from a visit to Armenia. They went to visit the orphanage at Kharberd and had a wonderful time with the children also donating diapers and taking cookies for the children. After spending time with them outside in the gazebo the children sang for them. They all went inside to celebrate with music and volleyball. The children loved having their photo taken and all the attention given to them with plenty of hugs and play time. The group was able to visit the new SOAR hippo therapy arena and horses. One boy, Movses gave Denise a book as a gift which is like a journal in which he wrote a beautiful touching letter to his mom that made them all cry. He said how much he loves his mom and is waiting for the day she will come to visit and he wants to hug her and kiss her and is waiting for her hug.

Runners participated in Zion Half Marathon
    zion_half_marathon_SOAR

As many of you know, I love to sweat away stress and spend time outdoors, but I hate to run. Somehow, thanks to my good friend and (business) partner, Heather France (who has a tradition of pretending she’s not getting older by signing up her friends to run races on her birthday), I am running the Zion Half Marathon in Utah this March. Once I got past the shock that I actually committed to doing this, I realized that I could use this as an opportunity to not only overcome the unthinkable idea of running 13+ miles at a 4,000 foot elevation, but to raise awareness and support for a cause near and dear to my heart.

My grandfather, my “Dede”, Bedros Levonian, was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide in 1915. A 7 year old boy at the time, he witnessed the brutal murders of his parents and siblings, escaped his captors in the middle of the night and found his way to an orphanage, where he was raised until the age of 18. Dede lived to tell his story, recalling much detail about the atrocities he endured. His was a story that made him the remarkable man that he was, a story that instilled in him so many of his core values - perseverance, determination, strength, faith, compassion, kindness, integrity, patience, love, loyalty and dedication, to name a few. He lived his entire life carrying these values close to his heart, and he always held his head high, proud to be an Armenian. Dede taught me that nothing is impossible with determination, dedication, strength, patience and faith. While the intent of the 1915 Genocide was to extinguish the Armenian race, it only made the survivors stronger and more determined to stay true to their Armenian roots. My grandfather instilled in our family the importance of embracing our Armenian heritage, never forgetting where we came from. My life has been inspired by my grandfather, and this is an opportunity for me to share his story and my Armenian pride with you.

My friends and I will be running this race in honor of my grandfather and all those affected by the Armenian Genocide. I ask for your support by making a contribution to SOAR (The Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing humanitarian relief to orphaned Armenian children and adults throughout the world. Please consider donating to this incredible organization that provides much needed assistance to Armenian orphans like my grandfather once was.

Thank you in advance for helping me honor my grandfather and his strength and determination, while I SOAR the mountains of Zion!

Christine Levonian Gresham, Esq.

It was a wonderful evening honoring Armenian artists and their artwork, featuring many amazing rugs that had a rich history. The evening was a great success due to our many contributors with special thanks to Oscar Isberian not only for his generosity, but also for the knowledge he shared with all the guests on the featured rugs. To top that off, delicious Armenian food was served, which made the evening even more delightful.

January

The Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief’s Colorado Chapter raised about $4,000 at its annual January Art Show to benefit the 2016 art program at Warm Hearth. The event also served to raise awareness about Warm Hearth, a group home in Armenia founded in 2006 for orphans with disabilities who have outgrown orphanages.

SOAR-Colorado welcomed George Yacoubian, president and founder of SOAR, to the event for the first time. Yacoubian gave a moving speech about SOAR and Warm Hearth.

The grassroots art show started as a way to celebrate January birthdays; rather than accept presents, the organizers encouraged attendees to donate to Warm Hearth. Since that first event seven years ago, the January Art Show has raised more than $25,000. In the spirit of the original, this year’s event included a drawing for a gift of handicrafts from Warm Hearth for a guest with a January birthday.

The January Art Show also featured colorful artwork from Warm Hearth residents, as well as local Colorado artists and artists worldwide that supported the cause. Local businesses donated raffle items, including a local distillery spirits basket and an Amazon gift card. The event also showcased the music of a local pianist and featured a caricature artist.

“This is a community event. Our guests are dear friends and family who help us organize the event. And every year we meet new people with beautiful hearts and minds who join our community,” said Maria Stepanyan, president of SOAR-Colorado. “We come together to celebrate humanity, to practice gratitude, appreciate art, give generously and cheer for Warm Hearth. Our annual gathering allows the residents of Warm Hearth to access art, and more importantly, to know that their lives matter.”

Since 2010, the art show has raised the annual budget of Warm Hearth’s art program from zero to nearly $5,000, funding art teachers, quality materials and supplies. Warm Hearth residents enjoy painting, paper mache, beading, carpet-weaving, drawing, embroidery and making traditional Armenian dolls. The residents now participate in exhibits and fairs in Armenia and sell their artwork to support the home.

The event was held at Noah’s Event Center in Westminster, Colorado.

A second family was also helped with the donation from SOAR Fresno. The family moved to Gyumri from a nearby village to be close to the medical center and hospital. They live on a state benefit and pay rent for the apartment. Two of the children and the mother have serious health problems. The mother was in tears while telling the story of their family how the father had left for outgoing work and was killed accidentally.

SOAR Kentucky held its first-ever fundraiser on July 3rd. Louisville Armenians and friends brought Vartevar to life in Kentucky! SOAR La Cañada is thrilled to announce that it has received 2 large donations to be included in the upcoming shipment to Armenia, benefitting the orphans.

Aren Aghamanoukian and the Boy Scout Troop 127 launched “Clothes for Change” project to benefit Armenia’s orphanages. They collected clothing, hygiene and other essential items valued at $40,000! They worked diligently and very hard for over 3 months to collect, organize and pack the boxes! We congratulate and thank Aren for his leadership in fulfilling this project with the support of his troop and troop leaders. We also thank SOAR La Cañada juniors: Arek Aghamanoukian, Alec and Aren Demirdjian for their help. In addition, SOAR La Cañada received its second large donation from Valentina Aemelian Papazyan, a 5 year old from LA, who wanted to help Armenian orphans and asked her mother, Helen to donate over 3,000 cotton shirts valued at $50,000 to SOAR La Cañada’s shipment. Valentina worked hard all weekend to help her mother load the boxes and bags to be picked up. We could not be more proud of Valentina (and thank Helen Papazyan) for her amazing spirit of charity and generosity towards the destitute in Armenia, specially the orphans.

The SOAR Montebello chapter had a fundraiser at a Montebello favorite restaurant. The event was hosted at Alondra Hot Wings on Monday August 15th between the hours of 4pm and 9pm. The restaurant donated a percentage of all itemized receipts left in drop boxes. Many customers participated in the fundraiser which led to a successful evening. The SOAR Montebello chapter is slowly gaining awareness within the Montebello community, and the board members look forward to planning future events.

June 4, 2016

The SOAR Montebello chapter had it's inaugural event on June 4, 2016 at the Armenian Food Fair and Festival in Montebello, CA. The Food Fair and Festival occurs every year at the Holy Cross Armenian Apostolic Cathedral. The SOAR Montebello Board Members thought this event would be an excellent opportunity to introduce themselves to the Armenian Community of Montebello, so they decided it would be best to become a vendor at the fair. They used a booth at the fair to pass out flyers and sell handmade loom bracelets with the Armenian flag colors. The loom bracelets are special to the Montebello Chapter because the idea to make and sell them came from Talia Ashrafian, a 7 year old student in the 2nd grade at Armenian Mesrobian School (and the Chapter Treasurer's daughter). Talia has a love and passion to help the suffering Armenian children, and her dream to sell the handmade looms have come to fruition. With a great amount of Talia's help, the board members were able to make over 100 loom bracelets which sold out at the Food Festival. The Chapter Board Members are thrilled with the turnout of their first event, and they are excited to expand the organization throughout the Montebello community.

With a gracious donation from the Basmajian and Japicca Families for our booth, we were able to participate in the 59th Annual St. Gregory's Armenian Food Festival which was held on September 9, 10 and 11, 2016. Our San Francisco "Debut" was where we collaborated with many different organizations and individuals, the out pour of support was horizontal and tall. Community leaders, clergy, and even school parents and passersby were so very kind, generous and incredibly open to listening, watching, and sharing with us why they chose to share their donations with SOAR. Some wanted to see their names on our boxes for various donations, others wanted to remain anonymous, the gamut was incredible. If you can believe it, consoling donors with dry eyes was the hardest part of our weekend, never did we imagine people getting emotional the way they did. We're so very grateful to all of our donors and the San Francisco Community at large for making our weekend a HUGE SUCCESS!
